NESA has today released the new 7-10 PDHPE syllabus. This follows the release of the K-6 syllabus last week.

Key points:

“The release of the new syllabuses brings the opportunity for critical reflection of our current practices and exploration of the needs of our students,” said Janice Atkin, Professional Learning lead at ACHPER NSW.

“We live in dynamic times and the opportunity to review and fine tune our PDHPE programs is very timely.

“On initial review, some of the most obvious changes we have found are in the structure of the content strands (now called focus areas) and the inclusion of explicit content on creating written texts.

“There is a reduction in the number of outcomes in each stage which could be seen as a positive. However, on closer reading, some current outcomes look to have been conflated into one outcome rather than being removed.

“There is a more comprehensive coverage of Respectful Relationships in the new syllabus. It is a focus area in each stage of learning from K-10 which is understandable given community concerns around consent and sexual violence in recent years.

“We’ll provide some more analysis of the new syllabus in coming weeks”, says Janice.
