$376.00Learn how to work smarter, not harder, when it comes to the CAFS Independent Research Project (IRP). Listen to accomplished CAFS teachers as they share their knowledge and experiences of teaching the IRP.
This full-day workshop will showcase different ways to teach IRP which you can adapt to suit your context. Learn new ideas around content, IRP facilitation and assessment. The workshop will be divided into 3 sessions:
Session 1 – IRP and research fundamentals
What do you need to consider when planning how to run the IRP?
- IRP facilitation – shifting from student-driven to teacher facilitated models
- Essential considerations before running IRP
- Modelling IRP – teacher facilitated – Groups with the same research question
- Research Methodology Content – Research Fundamentals
Session 2 – IRP and research methods
How does your school context influence when and how you run your IRP?
- Essential considerations for teaching and assessing the Research Methodology Module
- Modelling IRP – Teacher facilitated – Groups with different research questions
- Research Methodology Content – Research Methods with a focus on the Literature Review
Session 3 – IRP and research process
What is the process for deciding the question(s) for the IRP?
- Essential considerations for choosing IRP research questions
- Modelling IRP – Teacher facilitated – Whole class doing one research question together
- Research Methodology Content – Research Process.
Who should attend? CAFS teachers who have never taught the IRP before or are wanting to explore an alternative way to teach the IRP.

PRESENTER
Rachel McKay, Education Consultant and Professional Learning Officer, ACHPER NSW
Rachel is an experienced CAFS and PDHPE teacher who has been teaching in K-12 schools since 2009. She has a wide range of experience leading in areas including faculty, secondary curriculum, middle school wellbeing and differentiation for students with diverse learning needs. She is passionate about supporting student growth and achievement by developing teachers’ capacity to embed evidence-based practice into classroom and assessment.
ACCREDITATION
Participating actively in the Teaching the Independent Research Project in CAFS workshop will contribute 5.5 hours of NESA elective PD in the priority area of delivery and assessment of NSW curriculum – addressing standard descriptor 2.3.2, 3.2.2 and 3.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
