Masterclass #8 2022
Teaching Consent: Towards a more complex, student-focused relationships and sexuality education
The research tells us that there is a gap between young people’s understanding of the term consent, and ‘being there’. Explaining legal rights and responsibilities is one part of empowering young people but teaching consent through the lens of the law only is not enough.
Relationships and sexuality education is changing and more pressing issues have taken precedence including consent, social media, sexual and gender identities, and pornography. Best practice in the field recognises the importance of sexual ethics as a way of addressing both individual capacities and collective responsibility (Carmody 2009).
Jenny will unpack these concepts and explore how this thinking translates to your PDHPE program.
