Masterclass – Embedding a broader notion of community and wellbeing
May 11, 2023 @ 3:45 pm - 5:15 pm AEST
$30.00Our Masterclass series explores the latest health and physical education research. We offer 8 Masterclasses each year.
Masterclass 3 2023:
The way we often teach about individual, community and environmental health is to view them as separate concepts that can be improved through specific actions or behaviors. For instance, we may improve our individual health by eating well or enhance environmental health by recycling. This approach doesn’t allow for the interrelationships between the three concepts.
To develop a more holistic understanding of how we connect with each other, our community and the natural world, we need to explore both new and old knowledge.
Explore how a broader concept of community and its relationship to community health can shape PDHPE delivery in the future.
PRESENTERS
Dr Gabrielle O’Flynn, Lecturer, Health and Physical Education, University of Wollongong
Gabrielle’s research examines the place and meaning of health, wellbeing and physical activity in people’s lives. In particular, Gabrielle’s work examines the ways meanings of health, bodies, obesity, physical activity, and criticality are constituted by young people, school contexts, curriculum documents, health websites, government health campaigns, teachers and pre-service teachers. Her current work focuses on exploring and learning from Aboriginal children’s connections to culture and Country.
Dr Nicki Taylor, Lecturer in Sport, Health and Physical Education at University of Western Sydney
Nicki’s research interests include connecting people’s experiences in natural environments to health outcomes in school and community settings. She is currently investigating the impacts of ‘blue’ and ‘green’ spaces on health and wellbeing. In 2017, Nicki completed her PhD investigating the place – and absence – of ‘the environment’ as a health education issue in Australian schooling.
